Pond Water Care

There is a lot of interest both natural and man made ponds today.  People are interested in maintaining ponds so that they are attractive to look at as well as being free of odors.

The Bug Clinic is now offering a line of pond care products called Healthy Ponds®.   Healthy Ponds® products may be used in ponds of all sizes to help eliminate excess nutrients, eliminate odor and balance the water ecosystem.

The Basis of Pond Care

There are four basic indices that must be watched: pH, alkalinity, nitrates and nitrites.  Ammonia, another item to watch, is important if fish are present.

Healthy Ponds® is a series of products based on bacteria and enzymes.  When used on a regular basis, it will help restore and maintain the beauty that one looks for in pond water.  One can expect results within four to six weeks in most cases.

How It Works

There are a few components to the program.  First, the pond to be treated is "charted" by using with the aid of a 5 in 1 Test Kit to determine pH, alkalinity, nitrate and nitrite levels before anything is done.  This base information is recorded along with any other relevant information about the pond and its history.  Next, one of two delivery methods are used:  a 2500 gallon Submersible or an AquaSphere Pro dispenser.  AquaSphere Pro is sold as a smaller unit for treating 1/4 acre ponds or as a larger unit for treating 1 acre size ponds thirty days.  Both products contain biodegradable ingredients packed in biodegradable bags which are encased in recyclable, plastic housings.  Recommended treatment is for a least two consecutive months in order to see results (30-60 days).

In areas where mosquitoes and other insects breeding in pond water are a problem, we offer Healthy Ponds® Mosquito Control for sale in 49 of our 50 United States.  We may sell this product in every state except New York, without restrictions.  In New York, only state certified pesticide applicators may purchase and apply this product.  New Yorkers should contact us as there is a possibility that the restriction will be lifted in the near future.

Healthy Ponds® Mosquito Control is applied near the edges of ponds where mosquito and other insect larvae may breed.  Application is repeated at seven to fourteen day intervals during periods of high mosquito breeding activity.  Recommended treatment is one pound for every 2.5 to 10 per acre with rates as high as 10 to 20 lbs per acre for very murky (high nutrient) water where mosquitoes breed at high levels.

Pond Size Calculator for Pond Treatments

To determine pond size, here is information from the Healthy Ponds Web Site:

Correctly Sizing the Pond is Critical!

Establishing the correct size of your pond from the very beginning is extremely important. Because Healthy Ponds® is a natural product, over-treating a body of water will have no adverse effect. However, under-sizing and thus under-treating will not achieve the desired results.

For Small Ponds (for 2500 gallon Submersibles):

Rectangular or Square Pond

Length x Width x Depth x 7. 4805 = GALLONS
(All measurements should be in feet.)
For example, if your pond measured 15' x 24' x 3' deep
you would have approximately 8,079 gallons.

Round Pond

Diameter x Diameter x Depth x 5.875 = GALLONS
(All measurements should be in feet.)
For example, if your pond measured 17' in diameter with a depth of 2˝'
you would have approximately 4,245 gallons.

Use these measurements allowing one Submersible Dispensers for each 2500 gallons

For Larger Ponds (for AquaSpheres):

Rectangular or Square Pond

Length x Width = Area in square ft

Circular

Radius2 x 3.14  = Area in square ft

Acreage: 1/4 acre = 10,870 square ft or about 250,000 gallons

1 acre = 43,560 square ft or about 1,000,000 gallons

To determine the number of gallons for either type - multiply area x 7.48 (volume)

Use the area or volume to determine the number of 1/4 acre or 1 acre AquaSphere units or the number of submersible units needed.  Numbers substantially above 2500 gallons should be treated with a 1/4 acre AquaSphere.  Areas substantially larger than 1/2 acre may be treated with a 1 acre AquaSphere.

Remember, it is very important to install the required amount of Healthy Ponds® product in order to achieve the desired results.

Maintenance Schedule

Pond water is treated every 30 days for 6 months periods in cold weather areas, 9 months in temperate areas or 12 months in warm weather areas.  Water that falls outside of normal pH parameters may be treated with ph Up or pH Down products as needed.

Water should be retested and the readings recorded for reference when replacing units.

Mosquito Control is applied every seven to fourteen days, depending on the level of insect larvae in the water.
